The heart of the Medina: Fez
Cities, like people, have their own magic, their own unique and untold story. That is where the true beauty of each place lies, but to reach the heart of the places as well as the people, you have to know how to travel there.
My first time in Fez was like stepping back in time. I can still remember the smell of freshly baked bread in the medina’s labyrinthine streets, the feel of the sheets of paper in old books stacked on wooden shelves, and the touch of silks and satins. Those shaded tiled courtyards, its lush tea gardens, and its imperial architecture.
Considered the most complete ancient city in the Arab world and the cultural heart and soul of Morocco, Fez was the first city in the world to found a university. Known as AL QARAWIYYIN, it was founded thanks to a woman: Fatima Al Fihri. 1000 years have passed and the same university and its library still exist in the heart of the Medina, so walking through its streets is truly like a trip back in time. Among its great students are Maimonides, the famous Jewish philosopher, among others. A place you cannot miss if you travel to this romantic city full of sacred legends such as the story of Moulay Idriss.
